Through the combination of theory and practical training, this course provides participants with the necessary knowledge and skills required to work safely in confined spaces and operate respiratory protective equipment as per AS/NZS 2865:2009 (Confined Spaces). This training is suitable for employees who are required to enter confined spaces for maintenance, servicing or vessels etc with an irrespirable atmosphere.


This programme is intended to be site specific and therefore some of the content listed below may or may not be relevant to your rescue needs. Your trainer/assessor will discuss your rescue requirements prior to commencement of training.

Targeted Audience

It is recommended that all participants have completed confined space training within the last two years. If the rescue training is to include the use of breathing apparatus, all participants must be appropriately trained prior to undertaking any rescue training.

  • You must have attained and can provide proof, the unit MSMPER205 - Enter confined space within the last 2 years.  If the attainment period is longer than 2 years, currency within entering a confined space must be demonstrated.
  • Participants must be clean shaven. The unit of competency, PUAFIR207B  - Operate breathing apparatus open circuit
States that students use equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications. The manufacturer's specifications for breathing apparatus state: "The sealing line between head and face piece must be free of hair and foreign substances which could cause leakages". Furthermore, AS 1715 requires users to be clean shaven.
  • Due to the physical nature of the course, participants must also be fit and healthy and must not be suffering from any major injury.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • PUASAR025 - Undertake confined space rescue
  • PUASAR022 - Participate in a rescue operation
  • PUAFIR316 - Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials at an incident

Assessment will consist of practical and scenario-based assessment on site appropriate rescue techniques and procedures.
