 Course Overview

Our BSB51315 Diploma of Work Health and Safety (WHS) course will provide learners the opportunity to gain a qualification within the Work Health and Safety (WHS) industry. This Baseline WHS training course enables learners to achieve a Diploma of Work Health and Safety (WHS). Learners will be provided with the opportunity to grow their practical knowledge and skills in the development, implementation and management of WHS programs/systems.

Designed for:
This course is designed for participants who coordinate and maintain the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) program/system within an organisation.

Entry Requirements:

The specific course entry requirements are:
  • Completion of the enrolment process which includes identification of LLN levels – the learner must have the ability to read, write, interpret and calculate common workplace information, interpret and understand the practical applications of legislative instruments
  • access to a workplace with operational policies, procedures and systems.
  • currently, or have recently been, employed in a Work Health and Safety related role.
  • A laptop computer or mobile device with internet access
  • Ability to commit 16 hours a week to research and review of workplace practices and to participate in online discussion boards (asynchronous) to discuss course topics
  • Ability to attend an 8 hour workshop per fortnight for the course duration.


Participants must hold a Qualification/ Statement of Attainment with the 5 core units from the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety BSB41415 being:
  • BSBWHS402 - Assist with compliance with WHS law
  • BSBWHS403 - Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of a WHS consultation and participation process
  • BSBWHS404 - Contribute to the WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control activities
  • BSBWHS405 - Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of a WHS management system
  • BSBWHS406 - Assist with responding to incidents

Course Content
The BSB51315- Diploma of Work Health and Safety covers a broad range of health and safety functions and responsibilities within the workplace including:

  • Recognise, evaluate and manage health and safety hazards in the workplace;

  • Administer the various work health and safety functions, including planning, policy and process development in their workplace;

  • Communicate effectively at all levels of their organisation;

  • Achieve change in an WHS environment;

  • Gather and analyse the relevant WHS data information;

  • Develop actions, interventions and measures to prevent re-occurrences of incidents; and

  • ​Contribute to the implementation, review and improvement of their organisation's WHS plan and management system.

  • BSBWHS506 Contribute to developing, implementing and maintaining WHS management systems
  • BSBWHS502 Manage effective WHS consultation and participation processes
  • BSBWHS507 Contribute to managing WHS information systems
  • BSBWHS503 Contribute to the systematic management of WHS risk
  • BSBHRM509 Manage rehabilitation or return to work programs

Delivery Method
Course is delivered over a 6 month period including 12 x 8 hour workshops and 
Structured learning activities and online collaboration 23 x 16 hours – monitored and reviewed 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • RPL is available for those with adequate industry experience. Please contact us for more information on how to produce an RPL evidence portfolio.
Assessment activities may include a combination of knowledge questions, scenarios and workplace projects. Upon successful completion of the qualification, learners will be awarded – BSB51315- Diploma of Work Health and Safety.

Study Pathways
Learners who successfully complete BSB51315- Diploma of Work Health and Safety may wish to pursue further study to act as an official Health and Safety Representative (HSR) this involves completing an approved Work Safe Queensland, non-accredited HSR course.
