Course Overview

Our BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (WHS) course will provide learners the opportunity to gain a qualification within the Work Health and Safety (WHS) industry. Designed to provide learners the knowledge and skills to enable the provision of WHS advice to improve the safety practices in the workplace. This Baseline Training course covers a broad range of health and safety functions and responsibilities within the workplace including:

  • assessing WHS risks,
  • identifying hazards,
  • implementing strategies to control WHS risks, and
  • evaluating their organisation’s WHS performance.

Designed for:
Learners identified as best suited to this program are existing workers with substantial work experience and a broad knowledge of WHS operations. This group will include learners from a variety of industry backgrounds, who have acted in roles such as WHS officer or committee member wishing to formalise their existing knowledge and skills and to gain further understanding of WHS practices to pursue more advanced roles within WHS management hierarchy.

Entry Requirements:
The specific course entry requirements are:

  • Completion of the enrolment process which includes identification of LLN levels – the learner must have the ability to read, write, interpret and calculate common workplace information, interpret and understand the practical applications of legislative instruments
  • access to a workplace with operational policies, procedures and systems.
  • currently, or have recently been, employed in a Work Health and Safety related role.
  • A laptop computer or mobile device with internet access
  • Ability to commit 16 hours a week to research and review of workplace practices and to participate in online discussion boards (asynchronous) to discuss course topics
  • Ability to attend an 8 hour workshop per fortnight for the course duration.

There are no formal entry requirements.
Course Content
The BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety provides learners with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Prepare and advise workplace personnel for dealing with WHS issues.
  • Implement and support the WHS management system.
  • Understand WHS legislative requirements and assist with monitoring workplace compliance.
  • Implement WHS initiatives and processes that support organisational WHS goals.
  • Apply knowledge of risk assessment to contribute to the selection of risk-assessment techniques, tools and processes
  • Contribute to setting up and running of WHS consultation and participation processes.

  • BSBWHS402 - Assist with compliance with WHS laws
  • BSBWHS403 - Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes
  • BSBWHS404 - Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
  • BSBWHS405 - Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems
  • BSBWHS406 - Assist with responding to incidents
  • BSBWHS412- Assist with workplace compliance with WHS laws 
  • BSBWHS413- Contribute to implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processes
  • BSBWHS414- Contribute to WHS risk management
  • BSBWHS415- Contribute to implementing WHS management systems 
  • BSBWHS416- Contribute to workplace incident response 
Delivery Method
Course is delivered over a 6 month period including 12 x 8 hour workshops and 
Structured learning activities and online collaboration 23 x 16 hours – monitored and reviewed 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • RPL is available for those with adequate industry experience. Please contact us for more information on how to produce an RPL evidence portfolio.
Assessment activities may include a combination of knowledge questions, scenarios and workplace projects. Upon successful completion of the qualification, learners will be awarded – BSB41419- Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.

Study Pathways
Learners who successfully complete BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety may wish to pursue further study to act as an official Health and Safety Representative (HSR) this involves completing an approved Work Safe Queensland, non-accredited HSR course. Further study may also include:
