MSMWHS216 – OPERATE BREATHING APPARATUS

MSMWHS216 – OPERATE BREATHING APPARATUS

This course is intended to ensure the health and safety of people who undertake work activities within an irrespirable atmosphere, like maintenance workers, rescue workers, miners, and firefighters. Through the combination of theory and practical training, this course provides participants with the necessary knowledge and skills required to safely use and operate respiratory protective equipment.

An ‘irrespirable atmosphere’ refers to an atmosphere that contains poisonous gases/vapours or a lack of sufficient oxygen, and therefore poses a threat to wellbeing. Dusts, gases, fumes and mists are common hazards in workplace air, and they can seriously affect the health of workers if breathing apparatus is not used correctly. For example, breathing in asbestos fibres can lead to asbestosis and lung cancer. Inhalation of certain dusts can lead to crippling lung diseases. Inhaling some chemicals (like solvents) can damage many parts of the body, including the brain. This is why it is essential that every person who works in an irrespirable atmosphere receives certified breathing apparatus training.
