Safe Working in a Confined Space

Safe Working in a Confined Space

By combining theory and practical training, this course provides participants with the required knowledge and skills to work safely in confined spaces as per AS/NZS 2865:2009 (Confined Spaces). This training is suitable for employees who are required to enter confined spaces for maintenance, servicing, or vessels etc.

What is a confined space?

According to Worksafe, a confined space is any enclosed or partially enclosed space that:

  • Is not designed or primarily intended to be occupied by a person
  • Is (or is designed or intended to be) at normal atmospheric pressure while a person is in the space
  • Is (or is likely to be) a risk because of the atmosphere, contaminants, or engulfment

Potential hazards

Some of the potential hazards of working in a confined space include:

  • Oxygen deficiency caused by absorption of grains
  • Carbon monoxide build-up in wells (from the exhaust of an operating internal combustion engine if it is located near the well’s opening)
  • The presence of contaminants in the atmosphere
  • The build-up and release of gases like methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and hydrogen sulphide in manure pits
  • Suffocation caused by solids such as sand, grain, or fertiliser

Due to these potential hazards, it is imperative that those who work in confined spaces have received the proper training.

On successful completion of all theoretical and practical assessments, participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment with the following units of competency:

  • MSMPER205 – Enter confined space
  • MSMPER200 – Work in accordance with an issued permit
  • MSMWHS217 – Gas test atmospheres

The following topics will be covered in detail :

  • WH&S Statistics and Case Studies
  • Overview of AS2865:2009 & State Legislation
  • Definition of a Confined Space
  • Risk Management Principles
  • Written Authorisations (Permits)
  • Emergency Response
  • Atmospheric Testing & Monitoring
  • Toxic Contaminants & Workplace Exposure Standards
  • Hot Work & Fire Protection

The assessment for this program has been designed to assess a person’s competence in accordance with the Manufacturing Training Package (MSA07), AS2865:2009 and the proprietary requirements of the organisation or workplace. The assessment will consist of both a written and practical component.
