The Value of Leadership

Sound leadership is a fundamental asset of any organisation. Whether planning a succession or managing talent, improving relationships or increasing productivity, leadership has become the lynchpin of any business undertaking. However, at present, the term ‘leadership’ is often used to describe something resembling a formula or a code of practice. Leadership is not something you can learn from a handbook, and not just a means of operation. It is a skill applicable to all walks of life, as relevant anywhere as it is in the workplace.

What Is Leadership?

Leadership isn’t management or coordination, motivation or organisation, but the means by which these things are achieved. For the most part, being a leader means taking the initiative—being able to operate independently and without instruction, and the ability to encourage others to do the same. The abilities to motivate and to inspire form a core aspect of leadership, and are themselves an exercise in empathy. A good leader is one who can engage with people, discount their weaknesses, and emphasise their strengths.

Leadership forms a vital element of any business model, but doesn’t have to come from the top down. It is a trait useful at every rung of the ladder, and a leader will benefit any group or team they are a part of. As such, anyone working in cooperation with others can benefit from leadership training.

The Benefits of Great Leadership

Leadership training benefits both individuals and organisations. It can assist in promoting cohesion, mutual respect, attentiveness, and cooperation; encourages creativity and collaboration; and helps people become more confident and more decisive. It can also be a good way to avoid promoting otherwise reliable employees beyond their level of competency—by ensuring they meet the requisite standards prior to assuming a managerial role.

Leadership training encompasses all manner of strategies and mindsets that benefit the individual as well as the group. Developing leadership skills is as much about being a person as it is about being manager or supervisor. Leadership Training focuses on a broad range of skillsets that are applicable to all, from the bottom to the top. As leadership is the driving force behind any coordinated group effort, it can be just as beneficial to the individual as to the whole.

Ultimately, leadership is a quality—not a qualification—the uses of which are as strong as they are varied. That said, it is a quality upon which everyone can improve, and one which is indispensable when it comes to organising, managing, or coordinating a team effort.
